Abstract: The basis for this paper is the underlying study entitled “Promoting General Writing Competence in Vocational Education and Training (VET) Schools: Connecting L1 and L2 Approaches in Process oriented Writing” (PROSAB). This study connects L1 teaching concepts with those found in second language teaching in order to promote general writing skills in the field of VET. While L1 teaching approaches assume that the language skills needed for text writing are already sufficiently developed, second language teaching assumes that the required linguistic resources must first be developed or activated and recalled during the process of writing in order to successfully complete writing tasks. This approach to process-oriented writing didactics – grounded in both German as a first language and as a second Language teaching – was developed for classes of general education in VET schools and implemented in a writing teaching curriculum for the first year of studies. Its effect was subsequently examined in a controlled intervention study. This paper introduces the writing didactic concept with particular focus on the second language teaching elements contained therein. Selected results of the intervention study will be presented, and the impact of the didactic approach will be discussed.
