Zusammenfassung: Due to population growth and urbanisation, our cities have become increasingly dense in recent years. As private motorised transport shares the road infrastructure with freight transport, the relative availability of road infrastructure for logistics service providers has decreased. The logistics areas that were inside the city have been pushed to the outskirts to make room for residential and office buildings in the inner cities. These developments have led to logistics service providers having to deliver an increasing among of goods to cities, but also having to cover increasing distances due to the logistics sprawl (Aljohani & Thompson, 2016). The logistics service providers are convinced that they have optimised their routes and see no further potential for optimisation. Cooperation with other logistics service providers for further optimisation of delivery efficiency related to reduced driving distance, time savings, or shared vehicles is mainly unthinkable for the logistics service providers. The paper at hand aims to shed light into the question whether coopetition, i.e., cooperation between competitors (Luo, 2007; Scherrer, 2023; Scherrer et al., 2021) can lead to further optimisation potential emphasising the reduction of driving distance in urban areas.
