Abstract: Reports from the last two LIND-Web (2012, 2013) language industry forums call for the closer integration of universities, industry and associations in order to increase student contact with professional practice, heighten awareness of productivity requirements and broaden exposure to fast-moving technological developments. The perceived gap between the workplace and translator training has led to initiatives such as ELIA Exchange, intended to forge closer links between the language industry and training institutions. Yet the constraints faced by many training programmes place severe limitations on implementing solutions such as compulsory work placements and mentorships, necessitating alternative measures to enhance student employability and professionalism. These include targeted staff recruitment and development, close cooperation with professional associations and local LSPs as well as the deployment of combined CPD and graduate programme resources. In this paper, we report on how we are trying to provide a flexible range of intra-curricular opportunities for students on our MA in Professional Translation to interact with professional practice. From our perspective, structured interactions with professionals are an excellent way to prepare students for the realities of the translation workplace and present a viable alternative to internships.
