Zusammenfassung: | In recent years, translation scholars have become increasingly interested in the role of emotion in the translation process. One crucial influence that emotion exerts on cognitive processes, its influence on the allocation of cognitive resources and attention, has, however, not been addressed so far by translation scholars. This chapter outlines a study conducted with professional translators who translated three texts: One emotionally positive; the second, negative; and the third, neutral. The data suggest that emotional content influences the allocation of cognitive resources during professional translation and that this influence depends on the nature of the sub-process as well as on the valence of the emotional content. While we find that positive content led translators to engage more intensely with the source text, they allocated more cognitive resources to the negative target text. Moreover, the deep semantic processing of negative emotional content led to an emotional response during translation. The study illustrates the emotional aspects of translation and the importance of considering emotion in translation process research and our conception of translation performance. |
