The delirium occurs frequently, especially in elderly hospitalized people. A delirium guideline was implemented in the acute care hospital where this research was carried out to support evidence-based delirium management. In order to establish the reasons for adherence or non-adherence this study aimed to determine factors, which influence the use of this delirium guideline amongst nurses. Based on Mayring`s qualitative inductive content analysis eight individual and three group interviews with a total of 20 registered nurses were conducted and thematically analyzed. The analysis illustrated that family and intraprofessional collaboration were facilitating factors, while inter- professional collaboration, structural factors and nursing focus on delirium were impeding factors. Furthermore, nursing experience, nursing delirium expertise and nursing philosophy were identified as both facilitating and impeding factors. In addition, the study demonstrated that the influencing factors can only partially be directly influenced by nurses. There are external factors that are beyond the individual control of nurses. Hence, to sharpen the term guideline- adherence it should be merely used in the context of intrinsic factors.de_CH
