Abstract: This article aims to provide a basic introduction to Swiss food law. It describes the hierarchy of norms in Swiss food legislation and gives information about important legal provisions for the production and commercialization of food, as well as the sources of these provisions. Furthermore, it explains the impact of EU food legislation on Swiss food legislation and gives details of important basic principles on which Swiss food legislation is based (i.e., reporting and licensing requirements, self-supervision and the duties of the food business operator to ensure regulatory compliance, the precautionary principle, and the approval of novel foods). It also provides an overview of the competent authorities and the mechanisms for enforcing food law.
