| Abstract: | The notion of ‘role’ has long been at the centre of discussions in the field of community interpreting, while in conference interpreting the focus has largely been on interpreting ‘quality’. Other hot topics in conference interpreting include competence, memory, aptitude and didactics or professionalism, while in community interpreting these are (codes of) ethics, certification and professionalization. Buzzwords in conference interpreting are skills and knowledge, process and performance, accuracy and cognitive load. In community interpreting these are settings, agency, interlocutors, norms and standards, as well as neutrality, (in)visibility and impartiality. This chapter sets out to explore the differences in emphasis placed upon these constructs and how they interrelate. It attempts to bring together the various threads of the debate revolving around the above-mentioned notions and put them into perspective for a better understanding of interpreters’ roles and responsibilities. |
