Abstract: | In Northern European countries, the transformation of prevailing systems to supply and use energy for heating residential buildings is considered a major challenge in urban development. Ongoing renewal and growth in the residential building stock allows increasing energy efficiency by introducing new buildings standards. By additionally encouraging alternative sources for heat supply such as geothermal and solar energy, a significant reduction of greenhouse gas emissions seems feasible. To evaluate options and conditions favourable for such a development, we developed a spatial explicit, dynamic model for the transformation of the residential building stock. This model was used to assess energy demand and greenhouse gas emissions for heating the residential buildings in the City of St. Gall and analyse alternative scenarios for future development. The model incorporates the communal energy plan as well as empirical data of 50 refurbishment projects (estimates for construction costs and gains in energy efficiency). Modelbased scenario calculations show that the City of St. Gall can reach its ambitious goals in energy policy within the next 50 years. However, the municipality and private property owners have to provide substantial funding and make a great effort in refurbishing their old building stock. |
