Abstract: The numerical solution of Aeroelastic problems requires time-accurate simulations with prescribed or calculated motion of boundaries. For a number of practical reasons, the URANS approach is normally adopted. However, this choice might become questionable in the presence of particular physical phenomena such as separation of the boundary layer and shock - boundary layer interaction. The Test Case 3, in the Second AIAA Aeroelastic Prediction Workshop, re- quires the analysis of a shock separation and addresses the suitability of conventional URANS modelling for comparable flow conditions. This study compares the predictions obtained from URANS and the RANS- LES hybrid modelling approach: the latter technique clearly provides a physically more consistent solution. However, it also generate additional requirements on spatial and temporal resolution. Furthermore, it is difficult to quantify the practical advantages for the aeroelasticist: quality of predictions is measured on the basis of the time-average or first harmonic (with respect to excitation) of forces and moments. The currently available experiments only provide these quantities: this makes it very difficult to (i) assess quality of the prediction of turbulence and (ii) quantify the influence of turbulence modelling errors.
