Abstract: The porous structures of a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell contain liquid water and water vapor. The liquid water phase changes the transport properties for momentum, charge and gas species. An accurate numerical prediction of the water distribution at different operating conditions is highly important to PEM research. The so called Multi-Phase Mixture Model (M^2) is usually adopted to describe the two-phase flow in the porous parts of a PEM fell cell. An important feature of M 2 is that it is usable in the domain where single and double-phase zones coexist. In contrast, in the classical models, the interfaces between such zones have to be captured leading to numerically expensive algorithms. In order to account for the momentum evolution caused by the water evaporation and condensation, we suggest a new approach for an advanced use of the M^2 concept.
